  • Pisgah Academy Day, On Saturday, June 1, 2024, from 9:00 am to noon, Rev. Dr. Leah D. Schade will return to Pisgah as our moderator for a community dialogue on the topic: The Fusion of Religious Identity with Nationalism: How Should Churches Respond? The Pisgah Adult Sunday School Class has been preparing for this discussion by reading and discussing the recent book by Tim Alberta, The Kingdom, the Power and the Glory. Please join us for this discussion at 10:00 am before Sunday worship. This will be the third visit to Pisgah by the Rev. Dr. Leah D. Schade, Associate Professor of Preaching and Worship, Lexington Theological Seminary. Dr. Schade’s opening comments will be reflected upon by a panel of local ministers and religious leaders. From Dr. Schade: Public and religious discourse in the U.S. is being shaped by the fusion of religious identity and nationalism in profound ways. Experts estimate that up to one-third of the Americans sympathize with nationalist ideology – and some are willing to use violence to seize and maintain power. How should the church respond and in what ways can congregations resist and confront false narratives that are counter to the gospel of Jesus Christ? The Pisgah Academy will host a dialogue about these questions moderated by The Rev. Dr. Schade, author of Preaching in the Purple Zone and the forthcoming Preaching and Social Issues. Participants will learn how to identify the rhetoric, worldviews, and moral foundations that undergird religious-political ideology. We’ll also discuss strategies for building bridges of dialogue with family members and friends who lean toward nationalist beliefs. This event is free but contributions are welcome.
